Urban Homesteading! - A New Book by Transition California Member Rachel Kaplan

A comprehensive and inspiring guide to self-reliance, sustainability, and green living for city dwellers.

The urban homesteading movement is spreading rapidly across the nation. Urban Homesteading is the perfect “back-to-the- land” guide for urbanites who want to reduce their impact on the environment. Full of practical information, as well as inspiring stories from people already living the urban homesteading life, this colorful guide gives a clear understanding of the lifestyle to any reader. It embraces the core concepts of localization (providing our basic needs close to where we live), self-reliance (re-learning that food comes from the ground, not the grocery store), and sustainability (giving back at least as much as we take). Readers will find concise how-to information that they can immediately set into practice, from making solar cookers to growing tomatoes in a pot to raising chickens on a tiny plot to maintaining the mental serenity of country life in the fast-paced city environment. Full of beautiful full-color photographs and illustrations and plenty of step-by-step instructions, this is a must-have handbook for city folk with a passion for the simple life. 100 color illustrations

Thanks Art Martin - that feels good to know you like the book so much. I worked hard on that first section -- about 20 rewrites, I'd say! Wishing you a great day. Rachel

I got my copy and I can't recommend the book enough! The opening section is one of the most straightforward, humane, and compelling statements of the current, unsustainable nature of contemporary society that I have come across. The rest of the book is filled with good, inspiring ideas to do something about it in our own lives. The book is beautiful and very high quality -- I can't believe it's only $16.95 -- it's worth at least twice that, which is close to what some similar books I saw at Powell's cost.

Thank you Rachel and Ruby!

Hey friends - I would love it if you want to buy the book that you do it from our website, www.urban-homesteading.org, rather than from amazon. then you can know your money is going to 2 hard-working homesteaders, rather than into amazon's gaping maw!!  thanks.
