How might your current work contribute to the sustainability movement?
I am a first year student at UC Santa Cruz who is just becoming familiar with the Transition movement. I hope to be a writer one day.
In what ways do you personally identify with the Sustainability & Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I believe change is vital and urgent. Last year I read the book "Ishmael" by Daniel Quinn and realized not only that alternative ways of life are possible, but they are also necessary for the survival of our species. Also, the film "Thrive" helped finish where it seems Quinn left off; there are solutions already existent (free energy) to our global problems, and now what is needed is their communication and implementation. I am interested in this particularly because myself and some of my family members have had some encounters with anxiety/depression. My sister had terrible experiences with profit-driven psychiatrists/pharmaceuticals. I am a strong supporter of holistic health/alternative medicines. Also, I feel like it is the insanity of the current system is what drives such a massive of proportion of the population to mental disorders in the first place!
What background and skills do you bring to this community?
I'm 18 years old and do not have much experience in the workplace, other than the food/hospitality industry. However, I can bring love and enthusiasm, and I am a quick learner. Particularly, I'm interested in the arts (painting, jewelry-making, writing, yoga, and meditation.
What aspects of the sustainability movement most interests you?
The idea of sustainability and finally accumulating the ideas of like-minded individuals and putting them into action!
