Well, after several months of preparation and work the garden/farm project is up and running at Sunny Acres on Los Osos Valley Road. Some of you took tours and saw the land before it was planted. I would like to invite you to stop by and see the production that has begun, it is really quite impressive. Many thanks to David Braun for putting the plan together and heading up the project as well as Jessie, Eric and several of the residents who have labored many hours seeing this project come into bloom.
As many of you may know, Sunny Acres in San Luis Obispo is a clean and sober living program. We have planted a variety of crops (no pesticides) and are in need of people interested in volunteering some time to harvest and/or act as docents to teach others how to harvest and maintain the grounds. We will need several volunteers on a rotating basis to help with harvesting and planting throughout the year. Volunteers will receive an allotment of vegetables to take home.
Currently their are 10 varieties of lettuce, 3 varieties of bell-peppers, yellow and green summer squash, 20 varieties of tomatoes, indian corn, Sunflowers and more, with more varieties coming. The operation is scheduled to grow over the next few years. Sunny Acres will be donating part of this crop, as it has in past years, to the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo as well as other local agencies in need. The farm provides work and rehabilitation for residents of Sunny Acres and also gives the public an opportunity to work in the soil and volunteer for a worthwhile cause.
Please see the attached project plan drawn up by David for the continued growth of the farm project.
Please contact me if you would like to become involved at some level.
